Lionsgate Event Center Spring Bridal Show – 4/22/2013

The Hippie Limo - Denver & Boulder's Premier Retro-Mod Vintage RideWhen Lisa Brown, site manager at the Lionsgate Event Center, called me in January to hire the Hippie Limo to take her and her staff out on a well-deserved night on the town, it was with a heavy heart that I had to explain that our Samba spent the winter months hibernating. “No problem,” she said. “We’ll definitely call back in the spring!” Then after a pause, she added, “Did you know about our Spring Bridal Show? “

Moments later I was filling out a vendor application and making adjustments in my calendar.

If you are looking for a venue that combines colonial elegance and country grace with modern refinement then you will be delighted with the Lionsgate Event Center. The center is made up of two different facilities, The Gate House and The Dove House.

The Gate House impresses with its vaulted ceilings, large copper bar, Victorian staircase, and antique German fireplace and paneling. The most spectacular feature is a century and a half-old French stained-glass window which creates a dramatic backdrop. Eight French doors on its either side open onto a large covered patio and spacious grounds. The bridal party’s dressing and preparation needs are well met by two beautiful guest rooms with fireplaces and private restroom access.

The Dove House boasts large living and dining rooms appointed with gracious French and Oriental furniture, a gorgeous brick and flagstone solarium with oversized skylights, and a large dance floor presided over by an illuminated 1920’s art-deco bar. Beyond these visual delights, the Dove House caters to both the practicalities and whimsies of preparing for the big event by providing a bride’s room that is bathed in natural light, an adjoining bridesmaid’s room and family room, and a man-cave of a groom’s room that includes a big screen TV, gaming console, and air-hockey table.

It is well worth noting that the brightness and welcoming of the entire venue is only outshined by the helpfulness of its supportive and friendly staff!

The Hippie Limo was a big hit with both the brides and their entourages, as well as with the Lionsgate Staff who took a few moments out of their busy post-show cleanup activities to rock to the Hippie Limo’s 1000-watt sound system. Take a look at some of the day’s photos in the slide show below and visit the fantastic galleries for The Dove House and The Gate House at the Lionsgate website to get an idea of the amazing experience that awaits you.

The Hippie Limo Prepares for its 2013 Season with Adam’s Premium Car Care and the VWEC Show & Shine

The Hippie Limo - Denver & Boulder's Premier Retro-Mod Vintage RidePeople who love cars check their schedules (and occasionally make abrupt turns) whenever they spot an auto club’s “Show & Shine” event. For those unfamiliar with this pilgrimage for car aficionados, a Show & Shine is where owners of remarkable classic and modern vehicles gather in public alongside casual observers to admire each others’ rides, learn how to add that extra sparkle to a shine, bring back life to a faded finish, or fix blemishes made while attempting any of the above.

If you want to take the experience of a Show & Shine to a whole new level, make it a point to attend an event hosted by Adam’s Premium Car Care, a purveyor of the finest (and arguably the most dummy-proof) exterior and interior car cleaning and polishing products made in the USA. The company’s president and founder, Adam Pitale, is a master detailer and apparent stand-up comedian whose informative, entertaining, and interactive presentation on revitalizing and maintaining your car’s finish turns any show and shine into a Shine with a Show!

During his detailing clinics, Adam calls upon 20+ years of experience, an impressive combination of industry knowledge, product awareness, and daily practice, as well as possible insights into the little-known apocryphal auto polishing references in the Dead Sea Scrolls, to provide both novice and nuanced detailers with an array of tips, tricks, and techniques. Not only will Adam show his audience what to do while using a real customer’s car as an example, he will give them the chance to practice what he preaches by asking volunteers to step up and get true hands-on experience with his products and processes under his guidance.

The Hippie Limo had the chance to experience all of this first-hand at Adam’s German Made Detail Clinic and Auto Show, co-hosted by the Volkswagen Enthusiasts of Colorado (VWEC). As part of our preparations for our new season of adventures as well as our membership in the VWEC, I took our Samba to Adam’s World Headquarters in Louisville, CO for his clinic and was so impressed by what I saw that I decided to leave the Hippie Limo in the capable hands of his staff for a nose-to-decklid auto spa day.

If you want to experience one of these clinics for yourself check out the Events page at the Adam’s Premium Car Care website. If your schedule is a bit tight you can have the virtual experience of meeting Adam and learning from him and his staff on his Videos page where you will find dozens of professional-quality video tutorials that will help you rejuvenate (or even resuscitate) your car’s finish on your own. The company’s Forums page provides a great way to interact with Adam’s staff and other amateur and professional detailers to get and share advice over the inter-webs. To purchase any of Adam’s products you can go to his Online Store or visit the company’s Dealer page to find a local retailer. (I get my Adam’s fix at McGuckin Hardware in Boulder.)

The Hippie Limo’s Award-Winning Labor Day Weekend – 2012

The Hippie Limo - Denver & Boulder's Premier Retro-Mod Vintage RideFestivals and car shows are mainstays of the Labor Day Weekend. Last year when the Hippie Limo was only in its first year of business, we attended both the 2011 Louisville Labor Day Fall Festival and the 2011 Boulder Creek Labor Day Hometown Festival and showed our amazing Samba. Unlike last year when we barely knew what we were doing –  to the point of forgetting to pick up our registration packet to be considered for judging, as an example — this year we had our act together. And it paid off. The Hippie Limo brought home two more awards that now adorn our mantel alongside our Best of Show award from the Denver Modernism Show‘s Motorama Car Show.

Take a few moments to watch the slideshow below to see a bit of what you may have missed. After that you might consider going over to In the Press to see all the awards we have won as well as the media and blogosphere coverage we have garnered.

The Hippie Limo Wins “Best of Show” at the 2012 Denver Modernism Motorama Car Show

The Hippie Limo - Denver & Boulder's Premier Retro-Mod Vintage RideAs our dedicated follower(s) know, the Hippie Limo recently blogged about it’s plans to attend the Denver Modernism Show as well as set up a display at its automotive cousin, the Motorama Car Show. Little did I know what mojo was at work in those plans. Not only did I discover some treasures of retro-mod art, furniture, architecture, and culture in the Denver area, the Hippie Limo won the popular vote for “Best in Show” at the motorama!

The award was presented by the Denver Modernism Show’s Compère-beyond-Compare, Charles Phoenix. Apparently Mr. Phoenix is quite popular among today’s crazy kids who are obsessed with their Dungarees, J. D. Salingers, and 45 RPM records. This explains why he was completely unknown to me. Having now visited his website, learned a bit about him, and explored his NPR street cred, I wish I had taken more time to chat with this sommelier and self-described ambassador of America’s kitschy-pop past, present, and future. As it was, I only snapped one solitary image of the lanky time-traveller in his polyester stripped suit before moving on (and nursing a day-long, inexplicable craving for Beech-Nut Gum afterward).

As long as you are here you might consider going over to In the Press to see all the awards we have won as well as the media and blogosphere coverage we have garnered.

Take a look below to see who else stopped by to visit with the Hippie Limo.

Denver Modernism Show – 8/24-26 and Motorama Car Show – 8/26/2012

The Hippie Limo - Denver & Boulder's Premier Retro-Mod Vintage RideWhen I was in graduate school in the mid nineties I had a critical theory class in which we studied the Modernism Movement in literature (1900-1965). Funny thing about calling something “modern” is that by the time enough experts agreed on the name and identifying characteristics of the movement, the movement itself was already over! And if “modernism” is something that happened in the past, where does that leave us now? In the 90′s the answer was Post-Modernism, so does that mean Post Post-Modernism will follow? This makes the term “modernism” particularly unwieldy in my opinion.

The critique not withstanding, I am a real fan of the “modern” design aesthetic ranging from Art Deco to American Craftsman to 60′s Mod. Of course one look at the lines and styling of the Hippie Limo makes these design preferences pretty evident. It is worthwhile noting that the VW Split-Window Microbus was designed and built from 1949-67, which means it has a foot in all those periods.

For any of you with similar tastes you should attend the Denver Modernism Show on August 24th, 25th, and 26th 2012 at the National Western Complex Expo Hall in Denver. If you have an interest in mid-century, art deco, retro, pop, or modernist furnishings, artwork, objects, and artifacts, you will find your heart’s desire met in the 50,000 square feet of vendor-packed show space. You will also find the Hippie Limo there!

The Hippie Limo will be setting up shop alongside over 100 other cars as part of the Motorama Car Show on August 26th 2012 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, a show organized for the Denver Modernism Show by the Sunday Afternoon Car Klub (SACK), a Colorado affiliate of Lambda Car Club International (LCCI). You will find the Motorama’s selection of “post-Atomic American and European cars” in the National Western Complex’s adjoining Hall of Education (that’s right “in” – meaning an indoor show!). Admission is $8.00 which includes admission to the Denver Modernism Show!

We hope to see you there and we promise to post all of the photos we can get of the main Modernism show and it’s internal-combustion next-door cousin when we have them.

Buffalo Bill Days Parade and Car Show (and Justine’s Birthday!): Golden, CO – 7/28/2012

The Hippie Limo - Denver & Boulder's Premier Retro-Mod Vintage RideJuly seems to be a busy month for the Hippie Limo just as it was last year! Last week we displayed our Samba in the 1st Annual Starlite Diner‘s Classic Car Show to benefit Colorado Special Olympics. There the Hippie Limo won its first show award – 3rd Place for Orignal Stock Restoration 1960-84! Right on the heals of that event was the famous Buffalo Bill Days celebrations in the old-west’s Golden, CO.

The Hippie Limo was lucky enough to be selected to roll in one of the main events, the Buffalo Bill Days Parade. We had a wonderful spot in the middle of the parade and showcased four professionals from the Colorado School of Mines who danced and waved from the Hippie Limo’s sunroof to the 12,000+ spectators. The moment the crowds saw us coming they collectively smiled and then burst into laughter when they saw our Hippie Limo.com – Weddings & Special Occasions signs. I love how people react when they discover we are an actual limo service.

The parade went by all too fast but we still had more on our plate the following day when the Hippie Limo opened its doors for Justine Davis, Chelsea Walzack, Robin Braa, Karen Bolis, and Kathy Smith for their ride to Golden for a day of shopping and fun. Justine’s parents had given her one of the Hippie Limo’s gift certificates for a free ride for her birthday. This particular gift certificate was from our donation to the Crescendo! Big Sound Fundraiser to benefit Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts. We all enjoyed our ride along the Front Range mountains as we gazed through the 21-windows of the Microbus and watched the sky roll by through the 5-foot canvas open-air sunroof. I dropped off the crew in Golden for a shopping spree and then joined the Buffalo Bill’s Car Show on Washington Street presented by the Colorado chapter of the Antique Automotive Club of America.

The Hippie Limo played meet-and-greet to about 5,000 car fans while it waited to spirit the ladies back home. You can imagine the delight on their faces when they unexpectedly saw their personal chariot being the subject of so much attention. Right in the middle of the show I opened up the doors and helped the ladies board, much to the envy of all of the onlookers, and then took them on their music-filled ride back home. All in all, a great day for everyone!

The Colorado Bridal Show in Denver – 10/16/2011

The Hippie LimoThe Hippie Limo is grateful to the organizers of the Colorado Bridal Show for the opportunity to exhibit at the Doubletree Hotel in the Denver Tech Center on October 16, 2011. We had the pleasure of meeting a fantastic array of exceptionally creative brides, grooms, and families. The biggest highlight for us is that this particular show resulted in the Hippie Limo’s first television appearance!  Matt Flener and Corey Rose of KUSA-TV Channel 9 Denver welcomed us into the weather deck of their studio to talk about the Colorado Bridal Show and the Hippie Limo. You can see the interview for yourself here: Man Creates a Far Out Limo for the ‘Hippie’ Crowd.

Lafayette Days – Celebrate Kids Parade and Festival – 9/17/2011

The Hippie LimoThe Hippie Limo‘s donation to the Sister Carmen Community Center in Lafayette, CO prompted a quick call from Julie Piller, Special Projects Coordinator at Sister Carmen, to see if we might also be available to serve as the Grand Marshal’s vehicle for the 2011 Lafayette Days Celebration sponsored by the Lafayette Old Town Association. This year’s all-volunteer driven celebration hoped to raise money for the Centaurus High School Marching Band, which is one of 23 bands across the United States and the only band in the Rocky Mountain Region selected to perform in New York City as part of the 10th Anniversary 9/11 Tribute to the First Responders at Times Square on November 10th and in the New York City Veterans’ Day Parade on November 11th.

Lafayette resident and prominent radio personality Bret Saunders of the legendary radio station KBCO (formerly of Boulder, now of the Denver Tech Center) was the leading candidate for Grand Marshal at the time of Julie’s request. However, neither the glamor or the parade nor the lure of the Hippie Limo were enough of a draw. Instead Suzanne Crawford, CEO of the Sister Carmen Community Center served as the winning personality of the day, as is evident by her choice of outfit (see below).

The parade was short, but the festival was long on fun. My two-year-old son’s favorite part was the show put on by the Centaurus Marching Band – he danced himself silly for the full length of their performance. Sadly, we had to leave shortly after the band’s last number and could not stay to enjoy the many other attractions being held at the Lafayette Festival Plaza, but we hope many others did and wish the best for the band in raising the funds it needs.

Louisville Labor Day Fall Festival and Grand Parade – 9/2 thru 9/4/2011

The Hippie Limo

Labor Day weekend was actually a fairly labor-intensive one for the Hippie Limo as we had two auto shows, a parade, and a great birthday gig on the calendar. Saturday morning found us at the Louisville, CO Fall Motorfest at Community Park. This yearly event is sponsored by several local business, including Louisville Tire and Auto Care, Louisville Napa Auto Parts, Always Best Care Senior Services, and of course the City of Louisville. Though a relatively small show compared to the Wild West Roundup in Golden, CO we were at earlier in the year, it was a lot of fun. The usual mix of muscle cars and proper antiques surrounded the Hippie Limo, some of which made our 1965 microbus seem like a spring chicken in comparison. A prime example of such automotive senior citizens was the late 1920′s era Stutz Rumble Seat Coup that was right next to us (which incidentally was also the show winner). Mike Landess of Denver‘s Channel 7 News was the guest judge (and I gather he has been for several years), and though I applaud his selection of show winner, I do at least hope our Hippie Limo gave him a bit of a pause in his consideration. ;-)

We also were lucky enough to meet a couple of birthday revelers (see below) who decided to pose with the Hippie Limo as well as Adam Pitale of Adam’s Premium Car Care in Boulder, CO, a first-rate detailing products producer and service, who invited us to attend the Boulder Creek Hometown Fair‘s own Hometown Car Show the following day. My family and friends LOVE to go to this festival as well as its Memorial Day twin known simply as the Boulder Creek Festival. If you’ve never gone then definitely put both on your calendars as you will experience an array of vendors, tastes, attractions, and performers that you will find nowhere else.

When the sun rose Monday morning it was off to lineup for the Louisville Labor Day Parade. This year’s theme was Magic in the Air, and the Hippie Limo’s attempt to honor it was a playlist for our crowd-pleasing sound system that included The Who’s Magic Bus, The Lovin’ Spoonful‘s Do You Believe in Magic, and Steppenwolf’s Magic Carpet Ride. We were pretty much near the end of the parade so a few of the estimated 20,000 attendees may have already left, but we certainly felt that there were more than enough cheers, thumbs-up, and peace-signs to go around. Sadly we have no pictures of us in the parade, so if anyone out there does please send them to us.

Well, that about wraps it up for our labor-filled Labor Day. We can’t wait to see what next year brings!

The Rocky Mountain Bridal Show in Downtown Denver – 8/21/2011

The Hippie Limo - Denver & Boulder's Premier Retro-Mod Vintage RideThe Hippie Limo was fortunate enough to be invited to exhibit at the Rocky Mountain Bridal Show at the Denver Colorado Convention Center on Sunday, August 18 ,2011. Barbie Howard, the owner and producer, contacted me after looking at our website, commenting that it struck her funny bone in a way that made her just have to give me a call. Since the Rocky Mountain Bridal Show is one of Colorado’s largest and most well-attended bridal shows, and most importantly, because of Barbie’s professional, friendly, and accommodating manner, it was an invitation I gladly accepted.

The Hippie Limo was given a special place in the show as we were actually inside the Korbel Ballroom beside the other vendors and near the prize-filled balloon drop scheduled for the end of the day. Though it was a bit of a harrowing experience for me to drive our microbus up the truck dock ramp and through the back corridors of the convention center to get to the ballroom, it was well worth it when the crowds filed through and eventually saw our shiny red and white icon in a sea of black velvet booths. The Hippie Limo was very well received by brides, grooms, and vendors alike, and our growing display of 60′s bridal memorabilia garnered more than a few laughs.

I was fortunate to be able to exhibit at the show on another level, as well. My wife was at that time two days overdue for delivering our second child and was justifiably concerned that I might find myself locked inside a show and unable to make it to the labor or birth. Luckily Bill Walker, president of the Volkswagen Enthusiasts of Colorado VW club, graciously volunteered to be my standby to either fill-in or take-over for me in case I couldn’t make the show or had to leave early. Here’s thanks to Bill, a great guy and a great president. Luckily for me (but uncomfortably for my wife), she did not go into labor during the show, and still has not as of the writing of this article.

Among the vendors who took time away from their busy booths to visit us was:

  • The Food Guy’s Tom Harper whose company specializes in thrilling the palates of guests at weddings, social gatherings, and corporate events with tastes ranging from seven-course gourmet meals to finger lickin’ barbecue.
  • Adventure WeddingsRita McConnell who designs packages specifically for the adventurous couple’s proposal, bachelor/bachelorette party, wedding, honeymoon, vow renewal, or romantic getaway.
  • Trent’s Images‘ own Trent Norman whose mood, scene, and feel photographic style does more than create an image, it tells a story (and who also is featured in the Hippie Limo’s Photo Gallery)
  • Mahal Bella Photography‘s Anabelle Brunck who applies her artistic talents toward vintage, photojournalistic, and mod wedding photography.

Many heartfelt thanks to everyone who stopped by. We hope to hear from all of you soon. ;-)

Wild West Auto Roundup: Golden, CO – 6/11/2011

The Hippie Limo

Saturday was a busy day for the Hippie Limo. First there was the Wild West Auto Roundup in Golden, CO from 7am to 4pm, followed by the Chauffeured Evening with the Rockies for the winners of the Colorado School of Mines Athletics Department’s Fundraiser and Silent/Live Auction. The Roundup was the second auto show ever for the Hippie Limo after the 2011 Volkswagens on the Green sponsored by the Volkswagen Enthusiasts of Colorado, and the first non-VW show we ever ventured into. It was a bit intimidating being around all of those American muscle cars, especially since our Samba is just about as opposite from a muscle car as you can get. The orginal manufacture engine was a screaming 44 horsepower 1500 cc engine, and though the Hippie Limo ”boasts” an upgrade to an 85 horsepower 1915 cc, that is not much when paired against a same year Corvette with around 300+ horsepower for the smaller stock engine! Still, our Samba held its own in term’s of admirers. Spectators picked up about 200 of our business cards, gave us at least triple that in smiles and comments, and jammed to our 60s playlists on our 1000 watt sound system. I imagine not many VWs make it to this show in the first place, so it must have been quite a unique item for the regulars. Certainly a couple of the show judges thought so, and though we didn’t take home any trophies or ribbons <sniff>, we did take home the satisfaction of a day well spent.

We saw one vintage Beetle and one Thing in the lineup, and that was about all there was in the way of foreign makes aside from a lone Citroen. Of coure, we might have missed a few cars since there were over 200 in attendance and we couldn’t spend too much time away from ours. My son enjoyed the crowds and the sparkle of the other cars and gained a few odd looks when he climbed into the Hippie Limo and began bouncing on the middle seat. What can I say, he is part owner and has the right to do a little playful but non-damaging cavorting in the microbus. In fact, daily he requests at least one driving lesson using his two-year-old vocabulary by saying “Ride in the bus,” followed by a thoughtful look and the addendum, “with music.”

If you weren’t able to make the show, you can see a brief video of it here that was created by John Spalvins of WeTubers.com, a company that produces web-friendly marketing and informational videos for small and mid-range companies.

Volkswagens on the Green: Golden, CO – 5/22/2011

The Hippie Limo

Sunday was the first ever car show for the Hippie Limo, and we were fortunate enough to have a friendly audience in the form of air-cooled and water-cooled VW lovers. Volkswagens on the Green is a yearly gathering of olde skewl and new speed V-Dub owners and fans that features several hundred of the best specimens of VW engineering, current and past, that can be found in Colorado (and even a few states beyond). The show is the brainchild and ward of the Volkswagen Enthusiasts of Colorado (VWEC), and is one of only two major gatherings for old and new VWs  in the state, the other being the NuVintage  Bandimere Bug-In.

The Hippie Limo got to reminisce about all of the miles since the 60s with several of its bretheren (and sisteren) in a lineup of split and bay window buses that stretched at least 35 long. It is not often that you see splittys on the road at all, much less all lined up in a row. My son was particularly impressed by this as when he and I did a walk down the line to look at the bus branch of the V-Dub family, he would regularly stop in his tracks, point to the car just ahead, look up in a mixture of delight and surprise, and say “Another one!” When we returned from our stroll down microbus lane, my son spotted our Samba and took off running toward it, exclaiming “Our bus!”.

We really enjoyed all of the spectators and admirers that stopped by to say hello and pick up some of our promotional materials, but best of all was the welcome I received by the senior members of the VWEC. I haven’t been part of a club in a while, and it is nice to know that the old Woody Allen line doesn’t always apply:

“I’d never join a club that would allow a person like me to become a member.”

The Hippie Limo is glad to be part of the VWEC and the air-cooled VW community at large.

Miles of Smiles!
