Denver Metro GLBT Wedding Expo – 4/29/2012
The Hippie Limo is proud to be a part of The Denver Metro GLBT Wedding Expo which will be held Sunday, April 29, 2012 from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Summit Conference and Event Center in Aurora, CO. I was contacted by Cat Kirk the organizer of the expo last year inquiring as to whether or not I would like to exhibit. I enthusiastically said yes as GLBT equality (or LGBT as it is also known) is not only part of my core value system, but also a deep commitment that I give to my most wonderful friends and family of whom many are married same-sex couples.
Cat shared with me some interesting facts about GLBT weddings that I will share below:
Meet Today’s GLBT Couple
According to U.S. Census data about 780,000 couples identified themselves as being part of a same-sex couple household in 2008. An estimate from the Congressional Budget Office put the likely-to-get-married number at 600,000 if gay marriage were legalized nationwide. In 2010 there were more than 12,000 same sex couples in the Denver metro area.
More and more Colorado GLBT couples are getting married in states that have legalized same sex marriage and civil unions: Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont, Washington D.C., Washington State (as of 6/7/2012), and Maryland recognizes same sex marriage. Colorado is working to have civil unions put on the 2012 ballot.
Affluent
Today’s GLBT have an average wedding budget of $25,000-a third more that of heterosexual couples. Households run by two gay men average 35% higher income than same-sex couples. Many couples have been together for years and go ‘all out’ for their big day.
